Continuing the real-time detection test, I brought out hand-modified versions of the samples that TotalAV had detected on sight. That's decent, though others have detected more of them on sight. TotalAV wiped out 68 percent of the samples right away. I was pleased to see that when it had multiple notifications pending, it packed them all into a single popup. TotalAV started picking off the ones it recognized right away. The first test has a simple start-I simply open a folder containing known malware samples (along with some valid files) and see what the antivirus does. With no lab results to rely on, my own malware protection testing becomes especially important. At present, Bitdefender's aggregate score is 9.7 points, and Kaspersky's is 9.8, aggregating results from all five labs. Indeed, I've observed for myself that a product using a licensed version a company's technology does not necessarily score the same as the original. The labs state very clearly that their results apply only to the exact product tested, not to other versions, and certainly not to apps licensing antivirus technology. However, those scores don't necessarily reflect TotalAV's malware-fighting skills. Its aggregate lab result score, based on my calculation, is 10 of 10 possible points.
Three of the five labs that I follow included it in their testing, and it aced all of their tests.

You just log in with your account credentials to activate the product's full power. Immediately after installation on Windows, you've got the free (and significantly feature-limited) edition of TotalAV. The menu does give you access to the built-in password manager. A menu at left is also mostly redundant, as four of its choices duplicate the buttons. These scales seem just a bit redundant, given that the buttons themselves change color to indicate security status.
Below the buttons are four green-yellow-orange-red scales, one for each button, with a slider that represents the security level for that component. Each button displays a green ring when all is well, changing to yellow or red if there's a problem. Most of the program's slate-gray main window consists of a large panel with four rectangular buttons representing Antivirus, System Boost, Disk Cleaner, and Web Security. It's quite a bargain on a per-device basis. However, instead of the single license you get with these others, TotalAV offers five licenses. The sweet spot seems to be just under $40-over a dozen current products match that price, including Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Norton, and Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus $37.49 at Webroot.
